Spadafora

Spadafora is a noble Sicilian family whose first certified traces date back to 1230. Over the centuries the house has held five principalities, a duchy, two marquisates, an earldom and twenty-five baronages. Some family members have occupied prominent positions in the Kingdom of Sicily and in some European countries.

The founder was Don Pietro dei Principi di Spadafora, who had inherited it from his uncle Michele de Stefani, a talented farmer and breeder of race horses. The estate suffered significant damage during the 1968 earthquake, but Don Pietro committed himself to the reconstruction and redevelopment of the winery and vineyards, reappraising the native grape varieties and introducing non-native varieties to Sicily for the creation of quality wines.

The current owner is Fancesco Spadafora, son of Don Pietro, who gave up the fast life in Palermo for life on the farm. The marketing of bottled wine began in 1993 when Francesco, who had just taken over the direction of the house, decided to ferment his own grapes and propose them with his own labels. The winery is located in the Monreale district of Sicily (Contrada Virzi’), just 60 km from Palermo, a ‘unique place with its own beauty’ as Francesco describes it.

The estate extends over 180 hectares, of which 95 are vineyards (and other crops such as 20 ha of olive groves) and currently produces 300,000 reasonably priced bottles annually, some DOC, others IGT, all made with estate-owned grapes. Francesco has carefully analyzed the microclimate and soil types of his vineyards and has planted both indigenous and international varietals that are well suited to producing high quality wine in this area: Cataratto, Grillo, Inzolia and Chardonnay for the whites and Nero d’Avola, Cabernet and Syrah for the reds. Syrah holds a special place in Francesco’s heart and he produces one of Italy’s finest Syrahs, called Sole dei Padri.

The house philosophy is based on the utilization solely of grapes cultivated directly on the estate, which directly supervises every aspect of the production cycle with constant attention to quality based on modern viticultural criteria in the vineyards and fermentation practices in the cellars. The fruits of this rigorous philosophy and great passion are evident in wines of excellent quality.
