Sicilia IGP Syrah ‘Sole dei Padri’

Tasting Notes

‘Sole dei Padri’ is a landmark Sicilian wine, made with 100% Syrah grapes sourced form a single-vineyard in the highest part of the property, a vineyard with a north-northwestern exposure at approx. 400 meters above sea level.

Sole dei Padri was born as an offshoot of Schietto Syrah: while tasting samples from different tanks, Francesco noticed that a vat from grapes harvested at 400 meters, on sandier soil, had produced a wine that was more intense, more everything. Vines were planted in 1996, so relatively young still for a wine of such concentration. The wine is dedicated to his father and, as a father himself, to his daughter who drew the sun on the label as a child.

It is a ripe and concentrated wine which needs time and patience to reveal all of its subtleties. A dense ruby red, elegant and persistent in aroma with notes of red and black berry fruit, blueberries and blackberries, vanilla, and tobacco, it is of important structure and roundness, rich and ample, deep, silky, and with a formidable momentum on the palate, a harmonic balance between sweet tannins and freshness, and a long finish. Excellent with red meat and full-flavored cheese.

Monica Larner writes: “Francesco Spadafora makes one of the best Syrahs in Sicily and Italy” (WE, March 2013) and “To my mind, he makes some of the best Syrah available today, not just in Sicily but in Italy at large.” (WA, May 2014)
