Castel del Monte Rosso DOC ‘Rupicolo’

label image label image

Tasting Notes

Rupicolo is a fresh and fruity red made from the assemblage of traditional varieties of the Castel del Monte DOC area (Nero di Troia 40% and Montepulciano 50%) and the international Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). Fermented in stainless steel and aged for 9 months in glass-lined concrete vats.

The result is an easy-drinking wine that expresses a fresh bouquet and floral aroma with notes of black pepper and a pleasing and dynamic palate with a beautiful finish. Soft and full of fruit in the mouth, well-balanced and judiciously tannic. Enjoy with soups, rich pasta, flavored roasts, poultry, small game and cheese. Serve at cool room temperature.

If stored correctly, Rupicolo will hold well in the bottle for at least 3 to 4 years.

ABOUT THE GRAPE

Nero di Troia, also called Uva di Troia, is the third most important of Puglia’s native red grape varietals, after Negroamaro and Primitivo. While the latter are most commonly found in the Southern part of Puglia (Salento), Nero di Troia finds its ideal terroir in the northern areas near Foggia and Bari and it is one of the main components of the Castel Del Monte DOC appellation. Nero di Troia has an elegant bouquet of cherry and black currant but its typical astringency was traditionally attenuated by blending it with other varieties. The traditional Castel del Monte wines use Montepulciano to soften the rough edges of Nero di Troia, and in old vineyards it was common to plant a row of Montepulciano after every three rows of Nero di Troia.
